Coach Profiles

Rick Swan and Larry Draper - KC Pats Midget AAA Coaches

The "KC PATS WAY."

Sacrifices made, "for the good of the team," must be made equally by all or there is no team.

It would not be thought of as uncommon that within competitive athletics that the philosophy of fair playing time would be viewed as unconventional because it requires immense courage and an unwavering commitment to implement. For those who dare however, the results will be phenomenal. The results that occur under this philosophy can be best described with one word; RESPECT. It is this respect that the players develop for one another that is the key to the magic of sports. Respect is the essential element that allows for the creation of the TEAM. This philosophy forces the players, through a dependence upon one another to support and believe in each other. When players are provided an environment of expectations, responsibilities and opportunities, the coach makes a statement that he believes in himself, he believes in his team and he believes in every player on that team.

There is no greater force or effective motivator in sports than all team members believing in each other and feeling responsible for the success or failure of their team.

There is also nothing more important than for a coach to provide an environment in which respect and appreciation for all involved should be the primary goal. Once this goal is achieved that magic will present itself. It will be difficult to understand at first but soon you will realize that what has occurred is that, the whole is now much greater than the sum of its parts. Through support of the staff and the belief that all players will rise to a competitive level equal to each other, from that point on, together they will play at a greater standard of performance than ever imagined. The magic is there within every player and as long as they feel as an equal part of the team it will remain. Exclude just one team member however and the magic along with respect will fade and be replaced by resentment and despair.

The easiest thing to do in coaching is to allow oneself to give up on a kid by not being fair.

The hardest thing to do is avoid doing the easiest and ensure that everyone remains a part of the team's success.

On behalf of the KC PATS hockey staff (Larry DRAPER, Dennis POPIL and Darrell DINGWALL) I would like to take the opportunity to welcome you to the 2009/10 hockey season.

We have an extremely experienced and knowledgeable staff with Dennis POPIL (manager) who will be joining the KC PATS for his 14th year and Darrell DINGWALL who was selected as the 2010 Team Pacific trainer for the World Under 17 Hockey Championships in Ontario.

This year's KC PATS team will follow the motto, "I searched for glory and I did not see it...I searched for victory and victory eluded me...I searched for teamwork and I found all three." The amount of success that we will obtain as a team this season will ultimately be dependent upon every player's dedication towards what they can control (Preparation, Attitude and Work Ethic). Success is not so much a factor on what we do or even how much we do, it will be HOW WE DO IT that will separate us and ultimately separate the KC PATS from the other teams that we will compete against this year in the AMHL.

Our philosophy is based on a focus of both on-ice and off-ice character development ensuring that the 'player is always more important than the player." We allow every one of our players the opportunity to compete and excel in every situation in order to develop the essential skills to compete at the next level of their personal hockey path.

We are all excited about the upcoming season.

Yours in hockey,
Rick SWAN
