"Together is amazing" -   The coach and I decided that none of our boys needed another $10 gift from their teammates for a Christmas gift exchange   Instead, we talked to them need to support our local food bank.  The league they play in was hosting an All Star game on December 18 and they asked for donations to the food bank instead of charging an entry fee.  We decided this should be a team event, and the boys each brought $10 and we took them to Safeway to purchase items for a meal. We gave them some suggestions and they went about purchasing the items for a complete meal. Some boys pooled their money and others ended up chipping in more than the required amount out of their own bank accounts. Together they spent in excess of $225 and gained a better appreciation of how much food actually costs! Happy New Year!   Maureen Schell

Congratulations to the KC Lancers on winning Silver at the U of A Golden Bear Christmas Tournament!

December 25, 2010
KC Lancers Celebrate the Spirit of Christmas The KC Lancers understand our boys are privileged to play hockey and thought it would be a good idea for them to celebrate Christmas by finding a way to give back to those who are less privileged. A hockey mom on the team who works for Social Services requested the team do a food hamper for a local family in need. The entire team stepped up and put forth a great effort to make it happen, not just for one family but for two.  A coach offered a turkey, some hockey mom’s baked, some families grocery shopped while others donated enough toys for six children. Hockey players packed up hampers and hockey Dad’s helped to load the heavy boxes into the van. It was a fun and meaningful experience that brought the entire team together for a good cause. Maybe our boys learned a few things too. One young hockey player reflected on the evening and said, “Sometimes we get so caught up in the things we don’t have, we forget about the things we do have.”

KC Coach Mentorship Program kicks into action for the FY10 – FY11 Hockey Season
; Bob Green, Rick Carriere and Billy Moores give our KC Coaches some tips…

KC Coaches from Initiation to Midget were taking it all in as veteran hockey professionals Bob Green, Rick Carriere and Billy Moores focused in on some very important messages when developing young hockey players.
Dave Lynes, Director of KC Coach Mentorship Program opened up the first session with an overview of the mentorship program – “we are all here to develop hockey players, ensure they play at the highest level possible and make their development fun. Dave then introduced our 1st speaker Bob Green, GM of the Edmonton Oil Kings;
Bob spoke about scouting and the importance of good evaluations when forming your team.
1.    Identify the top, middle and bottom of the group early, and put your focus on the middle group to ensure you pick the right players
2.    Use games to find the right players as well – games will expose players and elevate others
3.    When releasing players, be positive and make sure the player wants to come back to the rink the next day
Rick Swan & Larry Draper, Coaches of the Midget AAA Pats then did a quick recap and we watched an important video about EAGLES and DUCKS – “we all need to be Eagles to drive positive change and work hard to bust up the flocks of negative Ducks”. Rick then introduced Rick Carriere, from the Medicine Hat Tigers;
Rick spoke about player development and the importance of building a good plan as a coach
1.    Be committed to improve your players and your team thru development
2.    Be consistent – don’t confuse the message
3.    Be patient – everyone learns at different rates and different levels
4.    Give Praise – find something to praise the player about, be positive and give specific feedback that will build their confidence
5.    Work on practice habits – hard work, good effort at all levels, keep it competitive and fun
6.    The 2 biggest things to work on are skating and competing
7.    The importance of character players on a team
8.    Build a plan around role specific player development
Billy Moores for the Edmonton Oilers took the stage in our next session focused purely on building an effective practice which in turn builds confident, over achieving and well developed hockey players.
1.    The importance of drill building – starting out small, building over 3 or 4 practices
2.    The importance of quality – look for the little things to improve upon – proper stick placement etc.
3.    Always giving feedback, make it positive and make it specific
4.    Never give up on a kid, they all have something special to give.
Both sessions were full houses and every KC Coach left there with a positive attitude and a few more tools to draw from.
Thanks to Rick Swan, Larry Draper and Dave Lynes for putting this together. It is efforts like these that make KC one of the best hockey development centers in western Canada.
