Cougars Coach’s Code

1.       Be reasonable in our demands on the young players’ time, energy and enthusiasm after all they have other interests as well.

2.       Teach players the rules of the game are mutual agreements which on one should evade or break.

3.       Avoid over-playing the “star player”, the average players deserve equal time. “Star players” must realize that every player on the ice assists in his or her goal at some point. Be humble and cheer on your team. Become a tight knit group and care for each other.

4.       Remember children play for fun and enjoyment and that winning is just one part of it. We never ridicule or yell at the children for making mistakes or losing a competition.

5.       The scheduling and length of practice times will take into consideration the maturity of the children.

6.       Develop team respect for the ability of opponents, coaches, spectators as well as judgment of officials.

7.       Follow the advice of a physician when determining when an injured player is ready to play again.

8.       Remember that children need a coach they can respect. Be generous with our praise and set a good example.

In summary, the creation of the successful volunteer coach is not based on the win/loss record but rather how he has changed the behavior of his players in the most positive way, taught the most valuable lessons and wants his players to come out of their athletic experience a better citizen. Believe in yourself, your team will follow.
